How It Works

Your final course grade is a weighted average of the work you've already done and your final exam:

Final Grade = Current × (1 − w) + Exam × w

where w is the final's weight as a decimal (30% → 0.30). Rearranging to solve for the score you need on the exam gives:

Required Score = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) / w
Worked Example

You currently have an 85%, want to finish with 90%, and the final is worth 30% of your grade.

  • Required Score = (90 − 85 × 0.70) / 0.30
  • Required Score = (90 − 59.5) / 0.30
  • Required Score = 30.5 / 0.30 = 101.7%

In this case the target isn't reachable without extra credit, since it needs more than 100% on the final.

Reading the Result
  • 0% or below: You've already secured your target — even a zero on the final keeps you there.
  • Between 0% and 100%: Achievable — this is the minimum score you need.
  • Above 100%: Not reachable through the final alone (you'd need extra credit or a grade curve).
Tip: "Current Grade" should reflect everything graded except the final. If your syllabus lists the final separately from other categories, its weight is simply that percentage.
